For 25 years, Walt Willey showed up on the set of ABC’s “All My Children” and made a living playing attorney Jackson Montgomery. It was a great gig, getting to act opposite Susan Lucci and be piped into the homes of fans five days a week.
The long-running soap opera ended its 41-year run on the network in September, but Willey is still reaching his fans, traveling with his stand-up act. He’ll appear this weekend at the Jukebox Comedy Club in Peoria for shows Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Willey said it has been difficult to watch “the dismantling of daytime television,” but at the same time he’s welcoming the free time.
“I hate change of any kind, but I also embrace it,” he said by telephone from his farm in Santa Fe, N.M. “When you’re doing something that long, it becomes a major part of your adult life. I remember (complaining) about all the things I couldn’t do because I was tied up (with the show). One of the things I wanted to do was to tour doing my stand-up act.”
